off the hook
off the hook這個習慣用語是從釣魚來的，最早的時候是指一條本來已經(jīng)咬鉤的魚又脫了鉤，重獲自由，后來到十九世紀中葉，才引伸為擺脫困境和擺脫責任。
請看下面的例句：
1.Seeing that he couldn't answer the question, I tried to get him off the hook by changing the subject. 看到他那個問題答不上來，我就設法換個話題讓他擺脫窘境。 2.If you are caught coming in late again, you won't get off the hook so easily anymore. 如果我們再發(fā)現(xiàn)你晚回來，絕不會輕易放過你！
